How we judge our decisions in the future, past, and present

Our current real time decisions are guided mostly by impulse, instinct, selfishness, and hedonism.

Our decisions when looking to the future are naively optimistic.  We overestimate our willpower and underestimate the forces of the world around us.  We forget the fragility and transience of even our surest plans, we fail to consider how growth affects our perceptions and priorities.

And in hindsight, looking back, we construct a grand narrative for all our decisions.  Everything is distorted and seen through the prism of how we imagine ourselves to be.  The rationale behind every choice will be subconsciously altered to perfectly align with the image we have created of ourselves.
